So earlier today I got to volunteer and help out at some kind of retirement home (I don't really know all the details, we kinda just went their and sang music). It was a really nice experience but one thing that I was worried about was the language barrier. After all, most of these people have speaking disabilities and also don't know English. It was intimidating at first but then I realized something -- everyone can connect through some way or another.
Once we started playing and singing music, everyone was speaking the same language. It was such an amazing experience to see the smiles light up on these people's faces as they began to recognize the songs we were singing. Then, when they started to clap and bang on the tables my group and I knew that we had managed to really reach some kind of point of communication between each other and the people around us. After we finished singing, some of the people at the retirement home showed us pictures of their family and asked us to play board games with us.
It was such an interesting experience to see how close people can connect without even knowing the same language. I can't wait to see what our other tzedakah projects will bring throughout the semester.
